Inside the Decay at FCT’s Kuchiko Vocational and Rehabilitation Centre
The FCT Vocational and Rehabilitation Centre in Kuchiko, Bwari, was established to help vulnerable people gain practical skills and rebuild their lives. It once trained beneficiaries in welding, tailoring, leatherwork, carpentry, agriculture and other trades. A recent visit found dilapidated buildings, overgrown surroundings, vandalised facilities and irregular electricity and water supply. Former workers and residents alleged that the centre now lacks instructors, food provisions, equipment and structured rehabilitation services. Some former casual workers living on the premises said they are owed salaries and allowances. A resident who sought help for a family member with substance dependence also said the family had to provide food, clothing and hospital care. The FCT Social Development Secretariat said the centre was designed for vocational empowerment, not medical drug rehabilitation, and acknowledged that admitting substance-abuse patients alongside trainees was a mistake. Residents and former workers are calling for urgent renovation, staff support and the restoration of skills-training programmes.
