Arizona Man Pleads Guilty to Murder of Hiker He Said He Wanted to Resemble
An Arizona man, Zion Teasley, has pleaded guilty to the murder of 29-year-old hiker Lauren Heike, who was attacked on a trail near her apartment in April 2023. Police said surveillance footage showed Teasley following Heike before chasing and stabbing her. Investigators linked him to the crime through DNA evidence, phone-location data and other forensic findings. During police questioning, Teasley reportedly said Heike looked like the person he wanted to be. Court records also cited his struggles with gender identity, sexuality and religious beliefs. He was already on probation following earlier convictions. The plea agreement removed the possibility of a death sentence. Teasley also pleaded guilty in a separate child sexual-exploitation case and is awaiting sentencing.
