Tinubu Signs Landmark NIMC Act to Modernize Nigeria’s Digital Identity
President Bola Tinubu has assented to the National Identity Management Commission Act, 2026. The new law creates a unified framework for identity management. It aims to bolster security and accelerate digital transformation. Ministers and National Assembly leaders witnessed the signing at the Presidential Villa, Abuja. The Minister of Interior said the integrated database helped intercept seven Boko Haram and ISWAP suspects at Katsina Airport. He attributed the success to seamless data sharing between NIMC, immigration services, and Interpol. The updated Act replaces the outdated 2007 framework. It strengthens the National Identification Number as Nigeria’s primary identity credential. It also promotes inter-agency collaboration to fight terrorism, identity theft, and financial crime. Senate President Akpabio and Deputy Speaker Kalu praised the reform. NIMC’s Director-General pledged to work with partners for smooth implementation. Stakeholders say the Act will enhance public trust and drive financial and digital inclusion.
