Oral History, Culture and Traditional Structure of Isuokoma in Ebonyi State
Isuokoma, also known as Isu, is a clan in Onicha Local Government Area of Ebonyi State. It is an agrarian community known for rice, cassava, yam, palm oil and other produce. The community includes Agbabor, Isuachara, Mgbanaeze, Amanator, Umuniko, Mgbanaukwu and Obeagu. According to oral accounts from elders, Isuokoma was founded by Ezentumoke Ugota, a hunter said to have migrated from present-day Isuikwuato in Abia State with his younger brother, Adu. The account traces the origins of the component villages to Ezentumoke’s descendants and explains the community’s historical links with neighbouring areas in Ebonyi and Enugu states. For administration, Isuokoma is divided into Isu Autonomous Community and Anioma Autonomous Community. The community preserves cultural practices including traditional titles, festivals, music, dance, local foods and marriage customs. This account is based on oral history and community perspectives, and remains open to further research and verification.
