Alaafin of Oyo Palace Mourns Death of Tortoise Said to Be 420 Years Old
Baba, a tortoise said to be about 420 years old, has died at the Alaafin of Oyo’s palace in Oyo State after falling ill on September 14. Palace officials said Baba was regarded as a historic relic of the old Oyo Empire and had lived through generations of Alaafins. Oral accounts say the tortoise was brought from Oyo-Ile to the present palace in Oyo town. The tortoise was a popular attraction for palace visitors and was reportedly cared for by palace attendants. It was fed watermelon, corn pap wrapped in leaves and grass before it stopped eating during its illness. Baba has since been buried, according to the palace.
