N700bn Metering Scheme Delayed Again as Free Meter Distribution Shifts to 2027
Nigeria’s N700 billion Presidential Metering Initiative is now expected to begin distributing 750,000 meters in 2027, despite funds being disbursed from FAAC in 2024. The scheme had earlier targeted an initial rollout of 1.1 million meters by December 2025. The initiative is intended to reduce estimated billing, improve electricity revenue collection and close Nigeria’s metering gap. It also includes training for more than 5,000 meter installers and support for local meter manufacturers. Between 2025 and the second quarter of 2026, DisCos reportedly issued 1.65 million meters through several schemes. Most were supplied through the Meter Asset Provider programme, where customers pay upfront. At an estimated average of N150,000 per meter, consumers may have paid about N133.9 billion for nearly 893,000 meters while waiting for wider free-meter distribution. Consumers and energy experts say the delay leaves many households exposed to disputed estimated bills. They have called on the Federal Government and project managers to explain the status of the funding and the revised rollout plan.
