Aliyu Says He Rejected ₦250m Offered Over Obasanjo’s Third-Term Bid

Former House of Representatives minority leader Farouq Aliyu says he rejected ₦250 million allegedly offered to secure his support for former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s third-term agenda. Speaking on a recent podcast, Aliyu said the bid was real despite Obasanjo’s repeated denials. He alleged that lawmakers were offered at least ₦50 million, while then-Speaker Aminu Masari and then-Majority Leader Abdul Ningi were each offered ₦400 million. Aliyu said he met with Obasanjo in Abuja after being contacted by then-EFCC chairman Nuhu Ribadu. He said he told the former president that the constitutional amendment needed for a third term would not succeed. The National Assembly rejected the proposed constitutional amendment in May 2006, ending the controversial third-term push.
