Yoruba Leader Links Trump Appointee’s Role to Atiku’s Washington Connections

A Yoruba leader, Chief Akin Malaolu, says the appointment of Karl Von Batten to a White House Presidential Commission highlights the international connections around ADC presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar. Von Batten is a managing partner at a Washington-based lobbying firm that has represented Atiku. Malaolu said there is no evidence that President Donald Trump appointed him because of that relationship, but described the timing as politically significant. He said the development shows that the contest ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 elections is increasingly extending beyond the country, including debates over governance, the economy and Nigeria’s international reputation in policy centres such as Washington. Von Batten has also supported calls for the FBI to release records concerning allegations linked to President Bola Tinubu.
