Scottish, Welsh and Irish Nationalist Parties Sign Self-Determination Pact
Leaders of the Scottish National Party, Plaid Cymru and Sinn Féin have signed a memorandum of understanding in Cardiff affirming the right of their nations to decide their constitutional futures. The parties say they will work together on economic policy, renewable energy and closer ties with the European Union. The agreement does not itself dissolve the United Kingdom, but it strengthens cooperation among parties that support Scottish independence, Welsh independence and Irish reunification. As the UK faces renewed debates over self-determination, I believe Nigerians should also reflect on the foundations of our unity. The decision to remain one country must rest on Nigerians' shared commitment, dialogue and democratic choices rather than any external force.
