INEC Warns Parties: Abusive 2027 Campaigns Could Attract ₦10m Fine, Jail Term

The Independent National Electoral Commission has warned politicians and parties against hate speech, threats and inflammatory rhetoric ahead of the 2027 general election. It said campaign messages that target ethnic, religious or regional groups, or provoke violence, may violate the Electoral Act. INEC said an offending candidate may face a fine of up to ₦5 million or 12 months’ imprisonment upon conviction. A political party may be fined ₦10 million for a first offence and ₦2 million for each further violation. The commission said it can monitor campaigns, query parties and enforce compliance with the political parties’ code of conduct, while the police and other security agencies are responsible for preventing violence at rallies. The warning follows several reported threats and controversial statements by political figures in different states. INEC urged political actors, the media, religious and traditional leaders, and security agencies to work together to ensure campaigns are based on ideas rather than intimidation or violence.
