Nigeria’s Real Problem Is Not Size but Productivity
Nigeria is larger than Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands and Belgium combined. But landmass alone does not create wealth. A country’s real strength lies in how well it converts its land, people, resources and institutions into productive industries and better living standards. Those smaller countries have built high-value economies through manufacturing, technology, logistics, finance, agriculture, healthcare and strong public infrastructure. Nigeria also has vast resources, a large population and entrepreneurial citizens, yet we still struggle with reliable electricity, transport, industrial capacity, human capital and value-added production. Land, oil, minerals and population are only potential. The real question is why Nigeria exports raw materials instead of finished products, imports food despite its agricultural capacity, and cannot yet build infrastructure fast enough for its population. Nigeria is big enough. What we need is greater productivity: more innovation, manufacturing, exports, jobs, reliable infrastructure and institutions that can turn potential into prosperity.
