Osun Governorship Poll: INEC’s Crucial Test Ahead of 2027

Osun’s governorship election is more than a contest to choose the next governor. It is a major test of whether the Independent National Electoral Commission can rebuild public confidence before the 2027 general election. Parties, observers and voters will closely watch the use of BVAS, result transmission, polling officials and election logistics. Public trust in electoral technology suffered after the delayed upload of presidential election results to the IReV portal in 2023. Although BVAS improved voter accreditation, many Nigerians felt that the gap between promised transparency and the actual process weakened confidence in INEC. A smooth, transparent poll in Osun could show that the commission has addressed those concerns. Technology, however, cannot solve every problem. Vote buying, intimidation, delayed materials, poor conduct by officials and perceived bias by security agencies can still undermine the process.
