Open Letter: Lekki Communities Should Secure Equity in Dangote Refinery

I urge the Onilekki and Onibeju of Lagos to establish a community development fund ahead of the Dangote Refinery’s expected public listing. The Lagos State Government should consider using part of the reported $100 million received for the refinery land to purchase shares in the company. Those shares could be held by the proposed fund for the long-term benefit of the Lekki communities. Such an arrangement would give the communities a lasting stake in an asset built on their ancestral land. Dividends could support local development, create opportunities for residents and strengthen community representation in employment and management. If the refinery is ever decommissioned, the land should revert to its original use and community ownership rights should be respected.
