Zimbabwe’s Simbarashe Steyn Kundizeza Wins 2026 Caine Prize for ‘The Blue Fighter’
Zimbabwean writer Simbarashe Steyn Kundizeza has won the 2026 Caine Prize for African Writing for his short story, ‘The Blue Fighter’. The £10,000 prize recognises outstanding African short fiction and brings international attention to emerging literary voices. Originally published in 2025, ‘The Blue Fighter’ follows a boy named Tinashe as his family confronts financial hardship after his father leaves his profession to pursue a passion for building fish tanks. The story explores family pressure, ambition, sacrifice and survival. Kundizeza was selected from a five-person shortlist that included Nigerian writer and critic Akinwande Jordan, alongside writers from Kenya, Cameroon and Egypt. The judges praised the winning story for its emotional depth, memorable characters and precise storytelling.
