Tinubu’s Makkah Visit Sparks Debate Over Religion and Political Double Standards
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu was photographed kissing the Black Stone and entering the Holy Kaaba in Makkah during a religious visit. The Kaaba is regarded as Islam’s holiest site. I believe the visit raises questions about the use of religious imagery in Nigerian politics. In 2013 and 2014, opposition figures criticised former President Goodluck Jonathan over photographs from his pilgrimage to Jerusalem, describing them as political public relations ahead of the 2015 election. Now, I see a similar pattern in the presentation of Tinubu’s trip. While officials say he is praying for Nigeria, many citizens remain focused on the cost-of-living crisis and the hardship facing millions of people.
