Nigerian Domestic Worker Allegedly Detained in Iraq After Paying $800 to Return Home
The family of Tawakalitu Morenikeji Oyedeji, a Nigerian domestic worker in Baghdad, Iraq, is seeking urgent government intervention over claims that her employer confined her and seized her phone. Her relatives allege that she paid $800 to return to Nigeria after her father died, but was prevented from leaving. They also claim her August and September wages, said to total $500, were withheld. The family says she was held in a dark room for up to three days without food or water and fears she could be transferred to another household. They want Nigerian authorities to locate her, secure her passport, recover the money involved and facilitate her return home. The employer's husband reportedly said he did not oppose her return but referred questions about her passport, phone and payments to the recruitment company. The case has renewed concerns about the trafficking and exploitation of Nigerian domestic workers in Iraq.
