Egypt Leads African Countries With the Largest IMF Loan Balances in September 2026
Egypt holds the largest outstanding IMF credit balance in Africa, accounting for nearly one-fifth of the continent’s total borrowing from the Fund. Its support includes an Extended Fund Facility and a Resilience and Sustainability Facility. The IMF completed Egypt’s seventh review under the Extended Fund Facility on July 30, 2026, releasing a further $1.8 billion. Egypt recorded no new disbursements or repayments in the first half of September. Côte d’Ivoire ranks second with SDR 4.14 billion, estimated at about $5.7 billion. Ghana is third with SDR 2.99 billion, or about $4.1 billion, after making an SDR 6.64 million repayment during the period. Nigeria does not appear among the countries listed.
