Israel Votes in Tight Election as Netanyahu Seeks to Retain Power
Israeli voters are casting ballots in a closely contested parliamentary election that could determine whether Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu remains in office. The vote is the first since the October 7, 2023 attacks and has become a test of Netanyahu’s leadership, security policies and handling of the Gaza war. His Likud-led bloc faces an opposition alliance led by former military chief Gadi Eisenkot. More than 7.3 million people are eligible to elect the 120-member Knesset. With neither major bloc expected to win a clear 61-seat majority, smaller parties may decide who forms the next government. The result could shape Israel’s approach to the Palestinian conflict, relations with the United States, judicial reform and compulsory military service exemptions for ultra-Orthodox men.
