Lagos 2027: Opposition Candidates Unveil Plans on Housing, Schools, Transport and Healthcare
Opposition governorship candidates and civic advocates used the Fela Debates in Lagos to outline competing visions for the 2027 election. The discussion focused on whether the state’s revenue and major projects are improving the daily lives of residents. ADC candidate Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour proposed ward-level vocational centres, 100,000 housing units within four years, expanded rail and water transport, stronger wetland protection and a waste-recycling system. He argued that government should prioritise affordable housing, jobs, public services and environmental protection over revenue figures. NDC candidate Funsho Doherty proposed free education through secondary school, school meals, transport support for pupils, affordable housing and stronger public accountability. PDP candidate Adedeji Doherty called for lower-cost medicines through pharmaceutical partnerships, investments that could reduce electricity costs and policies aimed at making life more affordable for Lagos residents. Speakers urged voters to assess how candidates intend to fund their plans and hold public officials accountable for delivery. The debate was held during Felabration and drew on Fela Anikulapo-Kuti’s legacy of challenging inequality and government failure.
