Sold for $5,000: Nigerian Youths Trapped in Southeast Asia Cyber-Scam Camps
A Nigerian man who accepted a promised telecom job in Laos says he was trafficked into a cyber-scam compound in the Golden Triangle, where his passport was seized and he was told he had been bought for $5,000. He alleges that workers were forced to run online romance and cryptocurrency scams under armed guard, with harsh punishments for those who resisted. After months of captivity, he was dumped without his savings and spent six months homeless in Laos before assistance from international and Nigerian authorities helped him return home. He says he returned to Nigeria broke, indebted and traumatised. The investigation also details another Nigerian’s alleged trafficking from Abuja through Thailand into a guarded compound in Myanmar. NAPTIP says criminal networks are increasingly targeting educated Nigerian youths with computer skills through deceptive overseas job offers shared on social media.
