Groom Gets 30-Year Sentence for Killing Best Friend on Wedding Night
A newlywed in Michigan has been sentenced to 30 years in prison after fatally running over his best friend on his wedding night. James Shirah, 24, struck Terry Taylor Jr. in Flint on August 30, 2024, just hours after marrying Savanah Collier. Prosecutors say he left the scene and returned before delivering a second blow. Shirah’s lawyer argued the crash was accidental, but he pleaded no contest to second-degree murder and related charges in April. In court, Judge Khary Hanible stated, “You are not a criminal. You are, however, a killer.” Shirah will be eligible for parole after serving 30 years. His wife faces sentencing later this month for acting as an accessory.
