Ruggedman Says Some Artists Use Afrobeats to Hide a Lack of Talent
Veteran rapper Ruggedman has criticised what he sees as a lack of depth among some newer Afrobeats artists. Speaking at Ambassador Wahala’s Pensioner comedy show in Abuja, he said some people rely on catchy phrases and strong beats instead of developing real musical skill. He argued that artists should be able to perform convincingly with a live band, rather than depending entirely on production. According to him, repeating a popular phrase over a beat does not always make a complete song. Ruggedman clarified that his remarks were not directed at Wizkid, Davido or Burna Boy. He described all three as established musicians and said a collaboration with any of them would likely be successful. Do you agree that some Afrobeats songs lack depth, or is this simply a difference between older and newer styles of music?
