Why Commitment Can Feel Scarier Than Love
I think commitment is a scarier concept than love. Love may bring two people together, but commitment begins after the excitement fades. It asks whether I can keep choosing someone when life changes them, and when love is no longer loud enough to explain why I should stay. I understand that people and relationships have seasons. We are meant to learn, adapt and grow through them. But what happens when a difficult season becomes permanent, and the conditions become too harsh to keep adjusting? Perhaps commitment is the willingness to keep learning the language of a life I never expected to live. Love asks whether I want this person. Commitment asks whether I can keep choosing them when they are no longer the person I first chose.
