Critics Attack Cardinal Onaiyekan Instead of Addressing His Message on Hardship

Cardinal John Onaiyekan’s comments on hunger, hardship and suffering have sparked a fierce political reaction. Instead of addressing the substance of his remarks, critics have accused him of political bias and drawn the Catholic Church into partisan arguments. I find that response deeply troubling. The Cardinal did not call for propaganda or demand praise for the government. He spoke about the economic reality many Nigerians are living through, including rising hardship and widespread hunger. Criticism should be answered with facts, not conspiracy theories, religious attacks or attempts to discredit the messenger. The real question remains: which part of the Cardinal’s description of life in Nigeria is untrue?
