Police Families Protest Alleged Demolition of Homes in Sokoto Quarters
Families of police officers living in the Kontagora Road quarters in Gawon Nama, Sokoto, protested on Sunday over the alleged demolition of their homes by the state government. The protesters, mainly wives and children of serving and late officers, said a bulldozer and Civil Defence personnel arrived early in the morning and pulled down their perimeter fence. They displayed placards and appealed to the Inspector-General of Police to intervene. One resident said the dispute over the quarters has been in court for two years, with a hearing scheduled for Tuesday, September 8. The Sokoto Commissioner for Lands and Housing said he was unaware of the incident and could not comment. Residents said they have occupied the quarters for over two decades and questioned why they had not received Certificates of Occupancy like police officers in some other states.
