Ogoniland Receives Ramsar Status for International Wetland Protection
Ogoniland has received a Ramsar Certificate recognising its wetlands and coastal ecosystems as areas of international importance. The certificate was presented during HYPREP’s 10th anniversary activities in Wiiyaakara, Khana LGA, Rivers State. KAGOTE President Chief Lesi Maol received the certificate on behalf of the Ogoni people and handed it to representatives of Tai, Khana, Eleme and Gokana local government areas. Environment Minister Balarabe Abbas Lawal said it is Nigeria’s 18th Ramsar designation. The recognition is expected to support conservation of Ogoni’s rivers, creeks, mangroves and coastline. These ecosystems provide livelihoods, fisheries, flood control, water purification and coastal protection, while restoration efforts continue after decades of oil-related pollution.
