NERC Hands Akwa Ibom’s Electricity Market Regulation to State Commission

NERC Hands Akwa Ibom’s Electricity Market Regulation to State Commission

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission has transferred oversight of Akwa Ibom’s intrastate electricity market to the Akwa Ibom State Electricity Regulatory Commission under the Electricity Act 2023. Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company is required to create a subsidiary that will handle electricity supply and distribution within the state. The transition is expected to be completed by February 2027. Akwa Ibom is the 17th state to receive a regulatory transfer order. NERC will continue to regulate electricity activities that cross state boundaries, including transmission, interstate generation, trading and system operations.
