Every year on May 30, the Igbo community pauses to honour those who lost their lives during the 1967–1970 Biafran war. While Nigeria officially observes war memorials on January 15, many Igbo now mark May 30 as National Igbo Day. On May 30, 1967, Lt. Col. Odumegwu Ojukwu announced the Eastern Region’s secession as the Republic of Biafra. This triggered a three-year conflict that claimed millions of lives.
