Nigerian Politicians Whose Careers Changed After Leaving Office

Political power in Nigeria can appear permanent. Convoys, security details and easy access often come with high office. But influence can fade quickly after an official leaves power. Former governors and ministers such as Joshua Dariye, Jolly Nyame, Diepreye Alamieyeseigha, James Ibori, Bode George, Stella Oduah and Farouk Lawan faced different setbacks after office. Their cases involved investigations, trials, convictions, imprisonment, impeachment, public criticism or damage to their political standing. Not all of them lost their wealth or influence completely, and some remained active in politics. Still, their experiences continue to fuel debates about corruption, selective prosecution and accountability in Nigeria. They also show that public office does not always shield politicians from later scrutiny.
