Four Nigerian Girls Rescued from Trafficking as Advocate Calls for Tougher Laws
Four Nigerian girls have been rescued after being trafficked to Mali and Burkina Faso. They were reportedly lured with promises of legitimate jobs, but were forced into prostitution. The survivors are from Plateau, Enugu and Benue states, and have appealed for support to continue their education and rebuild their lives. Anti-trafficking advocate Jumai Madaki says Nigeria’s laws need urgent review, arguing that weak penalties make it difficult to deter and prosecute traffickers. She also described the scale of trafficking in Plateau State as alarming. Madaki further alleged that more than 80 children from her community are still missing after a woman reportedly took them under the pretext of providing caregiving. Some children have been recovered, she said, but their identities may have been changed.
