Lagos Partners with Zoomlion Despite Past World Bank Bribery Sanction
The Lagos State Government has entered a concession agreement with Zoomlion Ghana Limited to revamp the Olusosun landfill. The deal aims to modernise waste management and turn refuse into economic value. However, an investigation by FIJ reveals that Zoomlion was debarred by the World Bank for two years following a bribery probe linked to a sanitation project in Liberia. The sanction stemmed from a negotiated resolution over improper payments. Ghana’s Auditor-General has also raised concerns in successive reports. Auditors identified cases where Zoomlion received payments without supplying contractually required equipment and where funds were disbursed without valid agreements or completed work. As Lagos moves forward with this partnership, questions linger over transparency and the firm’s track record in regulatory compliance.
