Israeli Officer Says He Does Not Regret Order Behind Deadly WCK Aid Convoy Strike
Israeli Colonel Nochi Mendel has defended his role in the April 2024 strike on a World Central Kitchen aid convoy in Gaza, which killed seven aid workers. In an interview published on 27 August, he said he gave the order for the operation and was “not sorry” for his decision. Mendel claimed there had been an overlap between WCK staff and Hamas operatives. World Central Kitchen rejected the allegation as false and said it was an attempt to shift responsibility away from the Israeli military. Israeli military prosecutors have closed the case without criminal charges, despite finding serious failures in the assessment that led to the strike. Australia, the UK, Canada and Poland have criticised the decision and called for accountability for the victims' families.
