Beyond Certificates: Assessing Tinubu and Other Leaders by Their Records

I am approaching this without partisan bias. Nigeria’s constitutional threshold for the presidency is secondary-school education or an equivalent qualification. It does not specifically require a candidate to present a secondary-school certificate. In countries such as the United States, a person may obtain a high-school equivalency credential without attending a conventional secondary school. Such credentials can support admission to community colleges and, in some cases, universities. It is therefore possible for someone with an unconventional educational background to continue through self-study and later formalise their education. I do not know President Tinubu’s childhood circumstances, and speculation should not replace evidence. Rather than focusing only on certificates, we should examine the public records of the leading political figures: Tinubu’s record as Lagos governor and president, Peter Obi’s record as Anambra governor and private-sector leader, and Atiku Abubakar’s record in public service and business. The broader question is whether Nigeria should place greater emphasis on competence, integrity and performance than on credentials alone.
