The Federal Road Safety Corps has warned motorists about fraudulent SMS messages that claim they have traffic offences to settle. The messages direct victims to fake payment portals designed to collect card and banking details. Several Nigerians say they lost money after trying to pay small alleged fines. Reported losses include ₦1.8 million, nearly ₦400,000 and $2,500. The fake portals may show offences for invalid vehicle plate numbers and offer suspicious discounts for immediate payment. Motorists should not click traffic-fine links sent through unsolicited messages. Verify any alleged offence through FRSC’s official channels or its toll-free line, 122. Anyone who has entered card details on a suspicious site should contact their bank immediately, block the affected card where necessary and preserve all evidence.
