China Executes Former Yoozoo Executive for Poisoning Billionaire Founder
Chinese authorities have executed Xu Yao, a former executive at a Yoozoo Games subsidiary, after he was convicted of murdering the company’s billionaire founder, Lin Qi, in December 2020. Prosecutors said Xu obtained alpha-amanitin, a deadly mushroom toxin, online and hid it in probiotic pills, coffee capsules, water bottles and whisky shared with Lin and other employees. Lin fell ill at a company event and died days later at 39, while several colleagues recovered after treatment. Lin’s company had secured adaptation rights for Liu Cixin’s bestselling sci-fi novels, which inspired the Netflix series “3 Body Problem.” Xu was found guilty in early 2024 and executed on May 21. Yoozoo Games later confirmed the sentence in a social media statement.
