What Are Nigerians Getting for the Cost of the National Assembly?

Nigeria’s lawmakers are entitled to salaries and approved allowances, but taxpayers are asking a wider question: does the cost of the National Assembly translate into effective representation, strong oversight and laws that improve daily life? RMAFC has disputed widely shared claims about lawmakers’ pay. In its 2024 clarification, the commission said a senator’s monthly salary and regular allowances totalled ₦1,063,860. It also listed separate, non-regular benefits, including furniture and severance allowances, while describing the vehicle allowance as a repayable loan. The debate should not stop at personal pay. Constituency projects, staff, offices, security, travel and other legislative expenses also require public scrutiny. Constituency allocations are not lawmakers’ salaries, but citizens should be able to track the agencies handling projects, the contracts awarded, the money released and the work delivered. With RMAFC reviewing public-office remuneration, higher pay must come with stronger transparency and measurable performance. Nigerians deserve clear answers on what was budgeted, what was spent and what results their representatives have produced.
