NDLEA Arrests Fugitive Kingpin Linked to Record 49.70kg Heroin Seizure at Lagos Airport
The NDLEA has arrested and returned to Nigeria Festus Ibewuike, also known as Chidibest Ibewuike, over his alleged link to 49.70kg of heroin seized at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos in February 2024. The agency said the 52-year-old suspect was arrested at Cotonou airport in Benin Republic on September 2, 2026, following intelligence and cooperation between Nigerian and Beninese INTERPOL officials. He had allegedly spent more than two years evading arrest, including while operating a hotel business in Mozambique under a changed identity. Investigators allege that the heroin was concealed in cartons of metal-cutting machines and marked with the code “ND”. The seizure was described as the largest heroin consignment recorded at Lagos airport. The wider investigation reportedly led to arrests, convictions, the freezing of 107 bank accounts and the forfeiture of properties linked to the alleged cartel. The NDLEA said Ibewuike has been returned to Nigeria to face charges, while other suspects connected to the case are either standing trial or have been convicted.
