South Sudan Soldier Jailed 10 Years for Killing UN Staff Member
A military court in Wau, Western Bahr el-Ghazal, has sentenced a South Sudanese soldier to 10 years in prison for abducting and killing a United Nations staff member while the victim was on duty on December 15, 2025. The court also ordered the soldier’s dismissal from the military and reduction in rank. The victim’s family was awarded compensation of 51 cattle, while the judgment allows for an appeal. The UN mission in South Sudan said the court heard 10 cases, resulting in four convictions and four acquittals. It described the ruling as an important step towards accountability for crimes against UN personnel.
