Ambrose Alli: The Bendel Governor Whose Education Legacy Lives On

Professor Ambrose Alli was born on 22 September 1929 in Idoani, present-day Ondo State, and died on the same date in 1989, aged 60. A medical doctor and professor before politics, he became Bendel State’s first elected governor under the Unity Party of Nigeria in 1979. Education was central to his administration. His government expanded access to schooling through a free-education programme aimed at reducing the burden on ordinary families. In 1981, his administration established Bendel State University in Ekpoma. The institution later became Ambrose Alli University, preserving the name of the former governor whose tenure made education a defining public priority in the old Bendel State.
