My Concerns About Kwankwaso, Sharia Law and a Possible Obi Ticket
I have concerns about a possible Peter Obi–Rabiu Kwankwaso presidential ticket because of Kwankwaso’s record on Sharia law in Kano State. Kano adopted Sharia-based criminal law in 2000 while Kwankwaso was governor. To me, this raises serious questions about freedom of speech, religious liberty and the treatment of blasphemy allegations. I am concerned that such laws can be used in ways that threaten the rights of religious minorities and dissenting voices. As a liberal Christian who values civil liberties, I want Obi supporters to address these concerns directly. What assurances would Nigerians have that a government involving Kwankwaso would protect every citizen’s constitutional rights, regardless of faith? I also believe claims about foreign governments’ views of Kwankwaso should be verified with credible sources. The larger issue remains whether his past role in Kano’s Sharia policy reflects the values he would bring to national leadership.
