NLC Gives Federal Government Two Weeks to Cut Petrol Price and Reopen Minimum Wage Talks
The Nigeria Labour Congress has given the Federal Government two weeks from Friday, October 9, 2026, to reduce petrol prices and begin renegotiating the national minimum wage. The union said inflation, naira depreciation and rising living costs have made workers' wages inadequate for food, housing, healthcare, transport and education. It wants petrol prices returned to the level in place when the current minimum wage was signed into law in 2024. The NLC also demanded tax relief and wage awards for workers, implementation of agreements with health-sector unions, and action on outstanding public-sector negotiation demands. It warned that its organs could approve further action if the government fails to respond within the deadline.
