TCN Rejects IKEDC’s Grid-Blame Claim, Says Low Generation Caused Outages
The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has rejected Ikeja Electric’s claim that grid instability caused recent outages on some Band A feeders. TCN says reduced electricity generation, not a failure of its transmission network, was the main reason for the supply shortfall. It cited gas supply constraints at thermal plants and lower output from hydroelectric plants, according to a clarification from the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO). TCN said 68 per cent of interruptions across feeders supplying IKEDC on November 1 and 2 were caused by load shedding linked to low generation. It attributed 26 per cent to IKEDC’s non-compliance with allocated loads or faults and maintenance on its network, and six per cent to TCN maintenance, switching or line limitations. Of 46 interruptions on the 33kV feeders cited by IKEDC, TCN said 29 were linked to low-generation load shedding, 14 to IKEDC’s network or load-allocation issues, and three to scheduled TCN maintenance. It urged DisCos to verify causes with NISO before making public claims, while acknowledging that customers are facing fewer hours of electricity.
