Nigerian Scholar Urges African Youths to Reclaim History at Accra Lecture
Nigerian scholar Ogochukwu Chidiebere Nweke has called on African youths to reclaim their history and build a future rooted in unity and self-determination. Speaking at an annual lecture in Accra honouring Nnamdi Azikiwe, Nweke highlighted the long-standing cultural and historical links between Nigeria and Ghana. He urged Africans to challenge narratives that present the continent as passive in world history. He pointed to the Mali Empire, Great Zimbabwe, Timbuktu manuscripts and the Benin Bronzes as evidence of Africa’s pre-colonial wealth, scholarship and innovation. He said understanding this history should inspire action rather than nostalgia. The lecture ended with a charge to young Africans to take responsibility for shaping the continent’s future.
