Benin City Needs a Long-Term Plan for Modern Urban Development
Benin City’s history is a major strength, but it should not become an excuse for poor infrastructure. Recent criticism of the city’s roads and facilities has reopened an important question: what kind of Benin are we building for the next generation? From Uselu and Egor to New Benin, Upper Mission, Siluko Road and Ikpoba Hill, residents and businesses continue to face flooding, damaged roads, traffic congestion and poor drainage. These problems require more than temporary repairs. Benin needs a coordinated urban plan that looks 20 to 30 years ahead. We need better drainage, safer buildings, organised commercial areas, effective waste management, public transport corridors and public spaces that work for residents, visitors and investors. Government must set and enforce clear standards, while citizens must stop blocking drainage channels and damaging shared facilities. Benin City can protect the legacy of the Benin Kingdom while becoming a safer, cleaner and more functional capital. The bigger question is not who repaired the next road, but what it should feel like to live, work and raise a family in Benin City by 2035.
