Lagos Murder Trial Stalled After Defence Objects to Unserved Evidence
The murder trial of State of Lagos v. Hammed Tajudeen Akanbi stalled at the Lagos State High Court on November 3, 2026, after the defence objected to the prosecution calling its first witness. The defence said it had not received the summary of the witness’s proposed evidence. The court directed the prosecution to provide the defendants with the documents making up its proof of evidence. An unopposed request to amend the charge and add Bode Ajose as a fourth defendant was also granted. The court vacated the November 5 hearing date to give the defence time to review the documents. The trial was adjourned to November 10, 19 and 25, 2026. The proceedings were attended by senior lawyers, including 85-year-old Madam Abimbola Akinjide Williams, SAN. Chief Femi Falana, SAN, appeared to hold a watching brief for the complainants. Claims circulating in the community about Ajose’s identity, background and alleged connection to the case have not been tested in court. The prosecution’s evidence on those matters has yet to be presented.
