Understanding Harmony: How Notes Combine to Create Chords
Harmony is created when two or more pitches are played or sung together. These simultaneous notes form chords and add depth to a piece of music. Harmony can also be implied by a melody. A sequence of single notes may outline the notes of a chord, allowing listeners to sense the underlying harmonic structure. In major-minor tonal music, the key establishes a home note, known as the tonic, and gives the music a major or minor character. While many songs remain in one key, more complex classical and jazz music may change keys several times.
