Tibetan Monk Self-Immolates Outside UN Headquarters in NYC to Protest Chinese Rule
A 52-year-old Tibetan monk, identified as Lobga Rangzen, set himself on fire outside the United Nations headquarters in New York City on July 2. He planted a Tibetan flag on the sidewalk and ignited himself in protest of China’s rule over Tibet. Witnesses say he scattered papers bearing the slogan “China Out of Tibet” before collapsing. Law enforcement arrived within minutes and took him to a hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. The act echoes more than 150 self-immolations in Tibet since 2009. The Free Tibet movement seeks to restore sovereignty to the region and return authority to the Dalai Lama.
