Decentralising Policing: A Vital Step for Nigeria’s Security

In a diverse nation like Nigeria, a unified defence force makes sense, but internal policing must be decentralised. A single police service risks becoming a tool of internal colonisation by dominant groups. Ethnic militias and insurgent organisations now control large swathes of territory, funding themselves through illegal taxes and ransom. Without local security structures, dislodging them will remain extremely difficult. Empowering each state or region to manage its own police force under a national defence command can strengthen unity and build trust across communities. True freedom after independence depends on secure, locally accountable policing.
