Samsung Ordered to Pay Swatch US$11.6m Over Copycat Smartwatch Watch Faces

Samsung Ordered to Pay Swatch US$11.6m Over Copycat Smartwatch Watch Faces

Samsung has been ordered by the UK High Court to pay Swatch Group US$11.6 million in damages over smartwatch apps that copied the look of luxury watch brands including Omega, Longines and Breguet. The court found that Samsung infringed Swatch trademarks by allowing watch-face apps resembling the brands’ designs to be offered through its app store between 2015 and 2019. The damages assessment considered royalties linked to about 160,000 downloads in Europe. Swatch had initially sought about US$170 million, while Samsung argued that the damages should be far lower. Samsung says it is reviewing the ruling and may appeal. A related case involving 10 Swatch brands is still pending in a US court.
