Supreme Court Refuses Trump’s Appeal, Upholds $5M Award to E. Jean Carroll
Donald Trump must pay E. Jean Carroll $5 million after the Supreme Court declined to review his appeal of a sexual assault and defamation verdict. Carroll sued Trump in 2019 for defamation and again in 2022 for sexual battery under New York’s expanded civil claims law. The jury heard both cases out of chronological order, awarding $5 million first and $83 million later, pushing Trump’s total liability above $100 million with interest. Trump’s team argued procedural errors, including the admission of other accusers’ testimony and the 2005 “Access Hollywood” recording, but a unanimous appeals court found no reversible mistakes. Trump has already deposited $5.5 million into a court account pending further appeals. Carroll’s lawyer called the Supreme Court’s decision a vindication for survivors. Trump’s attorneys plan to seek review of the larger $83 million judgment next, as legal battles continue alongside his presidential duties.
